What to Know Before Booking Accommodation in Montpellier

Montpellier is a popular destination. Most good hotels in Montpellier are booked early especially during festivals & events. As such in order to get the greatest offers, rates, and accommodation, it’s best to reserve your stay well in advance.

Personally, I use booking.com and have been using them for years. They are convenient and price match so if you find a cheaper rate elsewhere, they will reimburse you the difference. They are also flexible and can offer free cancellation and no prepayment. Make sure to read the conditions for your property when booking.

Most of the hotels are booked early so be sure to book your stay early.

This post discusses where to stay in the city center of Montpellier, but for context you can find an overview of all the areas in Montpellier below.

What is the Best Area to Stay in Montpellier?

The best area to stay in Montpellier depends on your preferences, lifestyle, and purpose of your visit. Here’s an overview of some of the areas in Montpellier:

  • Historic Center: If you’re after a historic charm, cobblestone streets, lively squares and historic buildings, then the Historic Center could be right for you. If you’re also looking for convenience and proximity to things to do in Montpellier, most of the city’s popular attraction, such as Place de la Comedie and the Saint-Pierre Cathedral, are located here.

  • Ecusson: Another ancient district in Montpellier, Ecusson is known for its tiny alleyways, secret courtyards, and medieval buildings. It is a more quieter alternative to the more central Historic Center.

  • Antigone: If you’re more after a modern design, Antigone is a modern Montpellier neighborhood constructed in the 1980s. It has neoclassical architecture and wide streets.

  • Comedie: Comedie is a vibrant neighborhood situated around Place de la Comedie, Montpellier’s main square. It has many stores, cafes, and restaurants and is a fun choice if you want to be right in the middle of all the excitement.

  • Port Marianne: Built in the 1990s, Port Marianne is a newer suburb of Montpellier. It has modern buildings, parks, and a marina, and is a nice choice if you want to be away from the touristy side of Montpellier and be close to the water.
